308th
Fighter Squadron
Mark
VIII Spitfires on Alert at Pomigliano, Italy
Note
the bombed out structure of part of the Alfa-Romeo
plant in the background.
"Pomigliano
is located nine miles north of Naples. It
had a fairly large airdrome with a concrete runway. The enlisted men and
officers were quartered in small apartment buildings which formerly had been
occupied by employees of the Alfa-Romeo factories. During
the fall of 1943, the ground forces were engaged in heavy fighting about twenty
miles north of Pomigliano and most of the Group's missions were air-ground
support missions. Its primary duty
was to keep enemy aircraft from dive-bombing and strafing Allied ground forces
engaged in combat."
