Mission Departure

P-51B Mustangs taxi-out to the PSP* runway at San Severo

"As we had done (previously) with the Spitfires, a ground crewman rode the wing during taxi-out to avoid accidents and jumped off as the planes lined up by twos for takeoff. They met their airplane when it returned and rode the wing back to the parking space. It was a dangerous, hot, dusty and noisy job.Several men were hurt when bounced off the wing, and one when another airplane landed on his while lining up for takeoff."
