This
P-51 is painted exactly as that of Bob Goebel, World War II Ace, who flew the
original P-51 with the 308th Fighter Squadron from Italy and Sicily
in WW II. Dr. Norm Lewis flies
to an airshow most every weekend during the summer months, and displays the
aircraft at the Kentucky Aviation Museum, at Bowman Field, Louisville, Kentucky.
During
World War II, the 308thFighter Squadron, part of the 31st
Fighter Group (known as the "Peppermint Group" because of the red and
white diagonal stripes painted on the tail of its planes) adopted the letter
recognition scheme from the British to distinguish the different squadron's
aircraft
