Presidental Unit Citation
On every occasion tonight they displayed dedication to duty and fighting prowess. On their first mission they escorted the 450th Bomber Group on a long, solo run. First their advance Squadron clear the path, then their escorting Squadrons protected the heavies in the care from all attacks. Initial reports from Col Samart of the 450th BG states that not once did any enemy fighters break through the 31st. After bringing their charges home, I requested that they take off again and assist Gb 40 who were heavily engaged. The 31st raced north and quickly took the fight to the enemy. As more and more LW units arrived on the scene, the 31st, with help from several other groups kept filling the buffer with victories. At this time it is unknown exactly how many scalps they brought home, however I would not be at all surprised to find the number near twenty. Finally I would like to thank the 31st personally for helping make my plan succeed. Salute. Tonight you did indeed "Return with Honor"
