Commander 31st Fighter Group United States Army Airforce takes pleasure in awarding the Air Medal to Second Lieutenant Efiter, Second Lieutenant Smiley, Second Lieutenant Leo, and Captain Kobra 308th Fighter Squadron 31st Fighter Group, for services as set forth in the
following citation:

It is my distinct pleasure to award Efiter, Smiley, Leo, and kobra the Air Medal for their heroic actions during the Berlin mission. Efiter and Leo were able to stay in contact with the bombers and provide close escort to the target, then they successfully returned to base with 4 kills for Efiter and 1 kill for Leo. Smiley was segregated from escort position during the early Luftwaffe attack, but was able to vector back to provide cover for the bombers on their egress. He also had one confirmed kill and returned to another base due to fuel considerations. Captain Kobra took over leadership of the group 60 miles from Berlin and was able to coordinate all available escorts to form up again with the bombers. With fuel being a constant issue, these gentlemen fought hard to Berlin and it was these actions that allowed the bombers to rtb safely.
