Distinguished Flying Cross

Commander 31st Fighter Group United States Army Airforce takes pleasure in awarding the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Efiter 308th Fighter Squadron 31st Fighter Group, for services as set forth in the following citation:

From: Commander 31FG

To: 31st FG Personnel

Via: Chief of Staff 31st FG

Subj: Personal Citations ICO 308th FS

During Sunday's mission to Rabaul Second Lieutenant Efiter was one of two escorts asked to stay with the bombers beyond a critical fuel situation. His choice to stay with the bombers prohibited the first wave of Japanese a/c from getting to the bombers. When 4 Japanese zeros and ki61s were seen making their attack on the bombers Efiter immediately attacked all 4. The Japanese were forced to avoid the bombers and deal with Efiter. Efiter smoked 1 engine, and the other 2 zeros attacked daddy. During this fight Efiter killed 2 more zeros that were shooting at daddy. With the bombers being safe Efiter short on fuel attempted to RTB. He was forced to ditch 2 miles from base, where a PBY quickly rescued the downed airman. It is with great pleasure that the 31st FG command staff awards the 'Distinguished Flying Cross' to Second Lieutenant Efiter.

Signed,

daddy
