Awarding the Air Force Cross to Captain Yamon.

This award is one of the most difficult awards to acquire. Captain Yamon and 2nd LT. Colmbo flew as a winged pair on a long range escort mission along with other elements of the 31st Fighter Group. For 2 hours these two men fought off Luftwaffe Fw190s and Me109s, while always remaining with the bombers. At the conclusion of the mission both pilots survived and landed their Mustangs.
For the amazing deed of destroying 5 enemy Luftwaffe aircraft in a single sortie, Captain Yamon is awarded the Air Force Cross
