Medals and Ranks

Medal of Honor Action above and beyond the call of duty, risking life where otherwise life would not be in risk, and exceptionally aiding the cause in doing so. Action should clearly merit the Medal of Honor in any pilots eyes. Required unanimous vote from Group HQ review panel.

Air Force Cross
Exceptionally valorous actions, but not deserving of a Medal of Honor, may be awarded the Air Force Cross. Required majority vote from Group HQ review panel.

Silver Star
Awarded for gallantry in action. Series requirements: 10+ kills in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft, or similar feat. Five frames must be attended. or Frame requirements: 5+ kills in a single S3 frame without loss of aircraft.

Legion of Merit
Awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct or superior service in either a combat or non-combat role. Series requirements: Serving as an S3 Frame CO in 2+ frames of an S3 series, or as CO of one frame of three consecutive S3 series. or Non-combat event requirements: Pilot assists HQ in areas such as running radar, typing of orders, or any other assistance in five total frames over the course of three S3 series. or Other requirements: Pilot deserves recognition for exceptional non-event achievements not covered elsewhere

Distinguished Flying Cross
Awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight. Series requirements: 5+ kills in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft, or similar feat. Five frames must be attended. or Frame requirements: 3+ kills in a single S3 frame without loss of aircraft.

Bronze Star Awarded for heroic actions involving the risk of life. Series requirements: 2+ kills in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft, or similar feat. Five frames must be attended.

Meritorious Service Medal Awarded for non-combat achievement. Training requirements: Pilot designs and/or supervises a training curriculum for the newer members to the group which is regularly attended. or Other requirements: Pilot deserves recognition for non-event achievements not covered elsewhere.

Air Medal
Awarded for heroic actions involving the risk of life. Series requirements: Flying in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft. Four of five frames must be attended.

Aerial Achievement Medal Awarded for sustained meritorious achievement in flight. Series requirements: Flying in all five frames of two S3 series in a row (10 total frames).

Air Force Commendation Medal Awarded for actions not involving the direct risk of life but otherwise earning the Air Medal.

National Defense Medal
Awarded for incontestable non-combat achievement in the service of the WarBirds community at large.

Combat Readiness Medal Awarded for continuous readiness for combat as shown by participation in 31st Fighter Group events.

Oak Leaf Cluster
Added to a medal for each additional time it is received.

Valor V Added to a medal when it has been received five times.

Confirmed Kill Each squadron member has their personal best streak kept track of. A Confirmed Kill is awarded for each kill scored during their best streak.

Rank Insignia Criterion
Colonel

Served as Group Commander or Executive Commander and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel for One year will be required to receive the Colonel promotion.
Lieutenant Colonel

Serving two years in Congress or serving one year in Squadron after retired from Squadron CO position will be rewarded with a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.
Major

Serving as Squadron CO qualifies an individual for immediate promotion to Major. Also, one year service with Congress warrants an promotion to Major
Captain

18 months service with good attendance, demonstrated command ability shown through performance as a Flight Leader, and demonstrated service to the 31st and to the WarBirds community qualifies an individual for promotion to Captain. Also, a change in position such squadron XO or any Congress position will warrant an immediate promotion to Captain.
1st Lieutenant

One year service with good attendance and demonstrated command ability shown through performance as an Element Leader qualifies an individual for promotion to 1st Lieutenant.
2nd Lieutenant

4 month service with the 31st Fighter Group while participating in mission nights, and a biography summitted to the Command Staff.
